    The history of the creation of Hollywood goes back to the beginning of the 19th century. As the story goes, the name “Hollywood” itself owes its birth to the Wilcox married couple who moved to America, who acquired a large plot of land in the vicinity of the small town of Los Angeles at that time. At the request of the wife, this site was named Hollywood, which means “wood” - forest and “holly” - holly. According to historians, a few years later, the Wilcoxes began to lease part of their land, and over time, a settlement grew around their estate, which was annexed to Los Angeles as a suburb.

    HOLLYWOOD HISTORY. HOW CINEMATOGRAPHY WAS CREATED

    Where did Hollywood start?

    In the early 20th century, Colonel William N. Zeling bought some of the land from the Wilcox couple, where he placed part of his film company, which he created in Chicago. A big impetus to the development of cinema in America received with a significant settlement of its territory by settlers. It was the settlers who became the founders of the largest American film studios, for example, the apprentice furrier Adolf Zukor, a migrant from Hungary, became the founder of Paramount, and the Warner brothers, who were engaged in bicycle advertising, eventually created Warner Brosers, the German clothing merchant Karl Leml became the founder of the Universal company, but the Metro-Goldwin-Mayer company was founded by the Russian scrap metal dealer Louis B. Mayer.

    In the early days, actors in American films acted under pseudonyms such as "The Vitograph Girl" or "Little Mary". However, the signing of an agreement with actress Florence Lawrence by Carl Laeml, founder of the Universal film company, marked the beginning of an era of fame and fame for Hollywood actors and put an end to the work of actors incognito. This initiative was eagerly picked up by other film companies. Since then, Hollywood stars have been born one after another.

    As the story goes, the first Hollywood film was The Indian Woman's Husband, a western by Cecil B. deMille.

    The excellent natural conditions of Hollywood, its cozy streets have become an excellent basis for filming films. Thanks to this, up to 800 films a year were created in Hollywood. Since then, the history of Hollywood began to develop at a tremendous pace. With the development of cinema in this city, the infrastructure necessary for film companies is actively developing: financial institutions, restaurants, clubs and many other entertainment complexes. In addition, the population of Hollywood was divided into two parts - the elite and auxiliary workers. Gradually, residential buildings were replaced from the main street by various buildings of film studios.

    The development of cinematography entailed tougher competition between small film studios. To avoid bankruptcy, it was profitable to create large film trusts from small film studios. Subsequently, these film trusts began to unite with rental companies. This is how film companies were born. "Paramount", "United Artists", Metro Goldwyn Myers, "Warner Bros".

    Hollywood developed rapidly, and soon they started talking about it all over the world. Almost every actor and actress dreamed of taking part in the filming of a Hollywood film and, of course, becoming a star, and not just a star, but a Hollywood star.

    A few words from the history of Hollywood cinema

    The first Hollywood film studio was created by the Centaur company, the Nestor studio. Westerns were the first films that were released by Centaur. Who would have thought that 10 years after the opening of a film studio in an abandoned diner that was located on the road, they would talk about Hollywood as the center of the film industry in the United States of America.

    Connoisseurs of film history consider the film "The Birth of a Nation" as the beginning of cinema, as a special kind of art. This film was directed by David Wark Griffith, who introduced the culture of cinema that determined the entire future development of the film industry. It was he who was awarded the Oscar for his special contribution to the development of cinema.

    Separately, I would like to dwell on the history of the appearance of the figurine itself. There are several versions of the appearance of this name. According to the first version, the figurine was named by the librarian Margaret Herrick, who, upon seeing the figurine, exclaimed that she looked so much like her uncle Oscar. The second version says that Bette Davis named the figurine "Oscar" because she was very similar to her husband, whose name was Oscar. It is worth noting that the figurine acquired its name a little later than it was first awarded. Already from the first Oscars, this event has been followed by residents of many countries.

    Alan Crosland, who starred in The Jazz Singer, was able to conquer all of America with his talent and gift for establishing psychological contact with the audience. This unique ability was noted by Charlie Chaplin himself. This film was released in 1927 and was the first of the sound films. It was with the advent of sound cinema that the golden age of Hollywood cinema began.

    The first film to be shot in widescreen was The Shroud. This film was directed by Henry Coster in 1953. The first full-length color film was made in 1935 by director Ruben Mamulian. The appearance of this film called "Becky Sharp" is considered the beginning of the era of color cinema in "Hollywood".

    Despite all the advantages of sound films over silent films, the transition to a new kind of film turned out to be a very expensive undertaking for Hollywood, so he had to turn to banks and other financial institutions for help. Under pressure from some financial institutions that expressed certain views of religious associations, Hollywood film companies were forced to sign a certain Production Code, according to which they had to avoid topics unacceptable to these organizations. Joseph Breen supervised the implementation of this code.

    Here are the main prohibited points of the Production Code:

    • religious beliefs were not to be subject to any criticism;
    • it was forbidden to show surgical operations;
    • films must not feature drug use;
    • a ban was imposed on the demonstration of drunkenness;
    • films should not show cruelty to children and animals;
    • the use of swear words in speech was prohibited;
    • the film could not show violence and details of robberies, so as not to encourage breaking the law;
    • the killing of a police officer by a criminal in the film was also prohibited, although the police themselves could kill criminals in unlimited numbers;
    • a ban was placed on sexual relations in the film as well. Passionate kisses, naked actors, same-sex or interracial relationships were strictly prohibited.

    History of children's and family cinema

    In the 1930s, going to the cinema was a family affair because there was no TV movie. Based on this trend, films were created in such a way that they were interesting to any viewer. However, there were also such films that were oriented towards the children's audience, although adults were also willing to watch them.

    Shirley Temple is considered the most famous young actress of the time. For the first time on the screen, she appeared at the age of 4 years. Over the next 10 years, she starred in 31 single films. Her popularity reached such proportions that many children's toys began to be named after her.

    It was the 30s of the last century that became the peak of the popularity of juvenile actors and actresses. Among them are Peggy Enn Garner, Freddie Bartholomew, Margaret O'Brien. Much more often, young actors appeared in musicals and comedies. The famous singer Deanna Durbin, who starred in the film "A Difficult Age", saved the Universal company from bankruptcy in 1938.

    However, the luxurious life of small actors had a downside. Before filming, they studied at the school at the film studio, and the filming day often ended after midnight. Many of the children were stuffed with a variety of pills to keep them from falling asleep on set and also from gaining weight. As a result, some children developed drug addiction.

    A few of the young stars managed to maintain their popularity until adulthood. Some were left without a livelihood at all, as their parents spent all the money they earned. One of these actors, Jackie Coogan, was forced to sue his mother in order to get back at least a small part of his earnings. Later, the “Coogan act” was even approved, according to which half of the money earned by a juvenile actor was to be transferred to his personal account so that in the future he could easily dispose of them.

    History of the Institute of Stars

    Initially, there was no institution of stars in Hollywood cinema. As such, it appeared in 1920 and was finally formed only in 1930. In the early days of Hollywood cinema, the stars seemed as inaccessible to moviegoers as the stars in the sky. Aspiring actors and actresses were taught in special schools attached to the studios, and big PR companies worked to maintain the image of movie stars. The yellow press has become a source of information about the personal lives of Hollywood movie stars, conveying to the reader the slightest details of inaccessible stars. Over time, when Hollywood cinema began to acquire modern features, the actors became closer to the viewer, in addition, they had more freedom. Now a Hollywood actor or actress could independently choose films in which they would like to act and form their image. We can definitely say that already in the 90s of the last century, the actors themselves began to set the tone for the development of Hollywood cinema.

    There are such famous people who played an important role in the history of the development of Hollywood cinema:

    • Max Linder, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, the Marx Brothers and Harrold Lloyd made Hollywood comedies famous;
    • Rudolfo Valentino made Hollywood melodrama famous;
    • John Ford made some of the most captivating westerns;
    • Film noir made famous by Humphrey Boggart;
    • Fred Astern and Gene Kelly made Hollywood musicals famous;
    • Thrillers were made famous by Alfred Hitchcock.

    Since films were being shot at that time, which were mainly aimed at the mass audience, this somewhat narrowed the possibilities and desires of the directors. Based on this, the leading places were occupied by the actors who were most loved by the public.

    However, by the beginning of the 60s, the mass audience was fed up with films that were shot according to the template, and this led to the collapse of the existing studio system. The directors thought about the question of what the viewer wants to see on the screen, this is what led to the emergence of new ideas in the cinema. The new wave of development of Hollywood cinema gave Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and others the opportunity to show their strength. It was these directors who were destined to stand at the origins of modern Hollywood cinema.

    History of the Walk of Fame

    Many have already heard about the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In essence, these are the sidewalks of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street, on which there are handprints of famous Hollywood personalities. Today there are 2600 prints and this is not the limit. The alley is regularly replenished with new specimens.

    The Walk of Fame has its roots in the 1950s. This project was developed by E.M. Stuart, on the creation of which he worked for several years. The main contradiction in the creation of this alley was the question “who is worthy to leave his imprint”. Initially, the number of applicants was 6 people. Subsequently, it increased to 130 and was constantly changing.

    1958 was marked in Hollywood by the laying of the first six stars, but only in 1960 did it officially open. Since then, the number of prints has grown many times over. It is worth noting that the stars are received not only by actors, but also by other figures in the film industry. The award takes place in five categories: contribution to the development of the film industry, sound recording, theater, television and radio.

    §one. Making Hollywood

    Nearly a hundred years ago, in early 1908, the first American filmmakers moved from the cradle of the national film industry, New York, to the West Coast, to California. This is how Hollywood appeared - the great "dream factory" and the capital of illusions. The word Hollywood is derived from the English word holly - "holly" and wood - "forest". In 1886, a certain Deida Wilcons from Kansas City, along with her husband, staked out a piece of land in the vicinity of Los Angeles, calling it Hollywood. A few years later, the couple began to lease the land, and by 1930 a whole village had grown around the ranch, attached to Los Angeles as a suburb. The first filmmaker to set foot on Hollywood land was William Zelig, who bought a piece of land to house a branch of his Chicago film company.

    The world's most powerful film production center emerged as a result of the so-called patent war. The famous inventor Thomas Alva Edison (1847 - 1931), who invented, among other things, devices for shooting and displaying pictures, had patents for his discoveries. Everyone who uses the results of other people's discoveries must pay for it. Movie theaters in the early 20th century grew like mushrooms after rain; by the end of the first decade there were more than ten thousand of them in America - almost more than in all of Europe. They were called "nickelodeon" for two thousand dollars, after three months they returned their money. When Edison's firm began to experience financial difficulties, the inventor decided to improve things by making those who used his devices pay. However, the owners of cinemas and distributors were in no hurry to part with the money. They responded to each appeal of Edison to the court with counterclaims. So the legal “patent war” broke out.

    To win for sure, the Edison firm teamed up with other companies that also owned a number of patents. The Motion Pictures Patent Company (MPPC) was born (often referred to simply as the Patent Trust). She tried to take full control of the production and distribution of films. On December 24, 1908, at the request of the trust, the New York police closed more than five hundred nickelodeons in the city that did not pay tribute. This day went down in the history of American cinema under the name "Black Christmas".

    Within a few months, the trust had extended its influence to much of the American film market. The disobedient film entrepreneurs (they became known as "independents") also united. A real battle has begun between the MPPC and the “independents”. Agents of the company, not content with legal action, broke projectors, poured sulfuric acid into tanks for film development. Once, on the set of an independent film, they provoked a fight between extras, after which several actors were hospitalized with serious injuries.

    Film production was then concentrated in New York and Chicago. In order to avoid persecution by the MPPC, in late 1907 and early 1908, the "independents" began to move away from these cities - to the West Coast. They fell in love with Hollywood - thanks to the mild climate, the abundance of sunny days necessary for shooting, the picturesque surrounding landscapes: mountains, forests, deserts, where a wide variety of scenes could be played. In 1909, the pavilions of the first stationary film factory grew up on Hollywood's Misha Road. And in the fall of 1911, the Hungarian immigrant William Fox (1879 - 1952) - a former tailor and future co-owner of the 20th Century Fox film company - began an action unprecedented in the history of the film industry. He filed a counterclaim against the ICPC's legal claims.

    The patent company ended its days ingloriously. In 1912, presidential candidate Thomas Woodrow Wilson won the election, putting forward a program to combat monopolies. The MPPC was accused of monopoly and dissolved by court order. However, even before this event, Hollywood began to gradually oust its enemy from the film industry market, as it organized the production of quality products that were more attractive to the audience.

    It is natural for people to turn again and again to what they like, and Hollywood has based its strategy on this inclination of a person. If the public liked the performer, after the first picture, the following ones with his participation were launched; acting fees grew, which were skimped on by the tight-fisted MPPC. So Hollywood gave birth to a system of stars - highly paid actors, idols of the public, performing in one role that the audience has loved many times. Prior to this, the names of the first American actors who appeared on the screen were almost never mentioned in the credits.

    If the public liked any character, she could count on new meetings with him. The same thing happened with subjects that were attractive to her. In general, Hollywood won because it discovered and actually managed to implement the principle of mass production of films.

    The Lumiere brothers, who are considered the founders of cinema, staged their first public screening on March 22 1895 in Paris, although the date of birth is still considered December 28th the same year when the first commercial show took place in the Grand Cafe salon. The public was impressed by this innovation, the moving image caused people a real shock. There is a version that people jumped up in fright from their seats when showing the short film "The Arrival of the Train." Over the next two years, shows were held in the world's leading capitals and cities. New York was one of those places.

    Salon "Grand Cafe", 12/28/1895

    Exactly New York became the first center of American cinema. By the beginning of the 20th century, there were already a small number of film studios there. But, as you know, later many figures moved the center of the industry to the west coast. This happened due to several factors.

    First, in New York, the rent was expensive. Secondly, in addition to the underdevelopment of lighting equipment, New York also had unsuitable weather conditions - cloudy and rainy weather interfered with film production. Thirdly, Thomas Edison, who in 1909 tried to monopolize the film industry, scared away all independent "movie makers", which led them to flee to the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas.

    Edison Film Trust It existed until 1913, when it was closed after a lawsuit, as its activities were contrary to antitrust laws. Over the years of his work, of course, he had not only a negative effect, which consisted in hindering the work of independent filmmakers, which in turn led to a decrease in the quantity and quality of output, but also a positive one - Edison prevented the penetration of European cinema in order to avoid competition, which, it seems to me that gave the American originality and uniqueness.

    The most popular place for justifying cinematographers on the west coast was the village Hollywood which is now known to almost everyone. At the end of the 19th century, it was just a huge ranch.

    In addition to climatic advantages (more than 300 sunny days a year), the place also had geographical advantages: mountains and the Pacific coast were nearby. Los Angeles served as a source of labor and building materials.

    Already at its origins, American cinema intersected with political topics and openly expressed its attitude towards them. In 1898, the American cruiser Maine was blown up off the coast of Havana, which caused the American-Spanish war. James Stuart Blackton made a film on the first day of the conflict Tearing Down the Spanish Flag", and later released the film" Raising Old Glory over Morro Castle". Both films express the author's attitude towards Spanish tyranny.

    The first feature film produced directly in a studio in Hollywood - Indian Woman's Husband by Cecil B. deMille. This is a silent western that was released in 1914. Its duration is 72 minutes.

    The Squaw Man, 1914

    The first movie theaters in the United States were called " nickelodeons“, they were very cheap, the entrance cost 5 cents. In 1908 there were about three thousand of them, but every year their number increased, because the cinema was in great demand. Competition led to the collapse of small studios, large film trusts began to appear, which merged with rental companies.

    In 1912, Universal Studios and Paramount Pictures appear. Such a giant in the field of cinema as "Warner brothers" is founded only in 1923, and a year later "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer" and "Columbia Pictures" will be created.

    Warner brothers logo, 1923

    By the 20th year, Hollywood finally becomes the center of the US film industry. 800 films were released there annually. The number of large film studios grew, a system of movie stars appeared.

    Unfortunately, the great demand for cinema provoked the orientation of cinema towards the viewer, and not towards the director. The directors were extremely constrained in their author's ideas. Actors and film producers came to the fore. The output was "spectacular" films that were designed to satisfy the mass public.

    The era of classic Hollywood.

    This period begins in 1928 with the creation of the RKO Pictures film studio. It is characterized by the so-called studio system, where the 8 largest film trusts controlled 95% of the American film market. These large studios were engaged not only in production, but also in the release of films, and they also owned entire chains of cinemas.

    Studios completely controlled the creative sphere. Long-term contracts were concluded with actors, directors and people of other cinematic professions, for non-performance of which large fines were due. Unwanted creators could simply be squeezed out of business. Perfectly characterizes the era and the term " star conveyor“: The studio management took young promising actors and promoted them, coming up with a name and biography for them. Professional awards were tacitly distributed by leading movie moguls.

    The monopolization led not only to overpricing, but also to the fact that independent cinemas were offered to buy five films at once, of which only one was a hit, the rest went "for quantity".

    However, the era was marked by major events and remarkable personalities.

    The first sound film was released in 1927. jazz singer“, it was after this event that the Warner brothers film studio became one of the leading “players”.

    The Jazz Singer, 1927

    In 1933, the hour of triumph came for the RKO pictures studio, which until then had always kept a low profile behind the backs of its more powerful colleagues. For the movie " King Kong Remakes are still being made.

    "King Kong", 1933

    Standing apart was the United Artists studio, one of the founders of which was Charlie Chaplin. She often helped independent filmmakers. For Charlie Chaplin, of course, you need to make a separate presentation. All I would like to say is that people liked his silent films even after the advent of sound films in 1927, and he continued to make them for another decade. His first sound film was The Great Dictator in 1940.

    This era is also marked by the appearance of the most prestigious award in the field of cinema today - “ Oscar". In 1929, the first award ceremony was held at the Roosevelt Hotel, it lasted 15 minutes, while the entrance cost $ 5, 250 people came to it. The funny thing is that the winners were known three months before, and this continued right up to 1945, only then sealed envelopes appeared. That year's winner was " Wings«.

    Oscar, 1929 Wings, 1927

    Also at this time were popular westerns by John Ford, who received four Oscars for directing, musicals with Fred Astaire and crime thrillers by Hitchcock.

    Since the late 1930s, high-budget films have been shot in color. After the war, the historical genre becomes popular peplum- large-scale films with a large timing on ancient subjects are being shot. They are dominated by scenes with an impressive amount of extras and scenery. One example is the film Ben Hur", which won 11 Oscars. Musicals also remained in trend and attracted the audience.

    The studio system still failed. Questions began to arise from the antitrust agency, which, after a lengthy lawsuit with Paramount Pictures, proved that the company had violated free competition law. The studio had to sell its theaters. Soon the RKO pictures studio did the same, and by 1954 all the studios did. Thus begins the era of New Hollywood.

    Era of New Hollywood.

    Studios began to lose most of their profits (almost 90%), as royalties to distributors grew, which, moreover, stopped buying films in batches (for example, non-hit films did not bring income to studios). Another problem facing the film business was falling theater attendance due to the spread of television. People didn't want to spend their evenings at the cinema when they could watch something sitting at home in front of the TV screen. The weakest companies were running at a loss, so foreigners began to enter the market. The company was the first Decca Records, which took control of Universal Pictures in 1951.

    Another consequence of the collapse of the studios was the increase in the fees of the stars. If earlier the actors still stood below the level of the studios and were forced to work under long-term contracts for the studio, now they come to the fore, as only well-known actors could ensure the commercial success of the film. Many agents began to demand from the studios not a certain salary for the film to their actors, but a percentage of the profits. For example, Hitchcock received $50,000 as a director for his film To Catch a Thief, and the actor who played the lead role received a fee of $700,000.

    Hitchcock on the left. Cary Grant (actor) - right

    The weakest of the major studios (RKO, United Artists and even MGM) were forced out of the market. The rest of the studios took on TV projects that were in high demand to fill the air time, occasionally investing only in reliable projects. Thanks to this, in 1957, half of the films were released by independent producers.

    Studio bosses could not understand what the audience needed. Lost in conjecture, they began to invite young directors who did not require much money and which led to experiments in the field of cinema. Often, such people from film schools and small studios broke the traditions that had developed in cinematography, took some style of auteur European cinema and gave the product something completely new and frank.

    At this time, such masters as Stanley Kubrick, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen and others are creating.

    "The Godfather" by F.F. Coppola

    Interest in experiments faded in the late 70s, when the film " gate of heaven' failed at the box office. It is still considered one of the biggest box office failures. At the time, sci-fi and blockbusters like Steven Spielberg's Jaws and George Lucas' Star Wars were the main source of income, so the studios decided to follow the proven path of financing projects aimed at commercial success and the mass audience.

    "Heaven's Gate"

    modern period.

    Today, the American film market is dominated by six studios: Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Columbia Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Universal Studios, and the Walt Disney Company.

    But the products of independent companies (10-15%), such as Lionsgate, Dreamworks, The Weinstein Company and others, also occupy their own niche. Unfortunately, the most profitable films are still show-oriented films, that is, with a lot of special effects and computer graphics. Sequels, prequels and remakes of already sensational hits are also the most successful, which suggests a certain stagnation in American cinema.

    There are also positive aspects. This is still access to independent cinema and blurring the line between it and commercial projects. The trend towards this was outlined back in the 90s, when the films of Quentin Tarantino and the Coen brothers collected more than average studio pictures.

    Nevertheless, American cinema is still the most massive and popular in the world. Almost half of all world films are released in America. Of the characteristic features of the US film industry, one can note: monopolization, which gave rise to the "star pipeline" with the subsequent idealization of actors and an increase in their fees, "Hollywood stamps" and the standardization of the films offered. It was in the United States that leading actors began to be indicated on movie posters. Also a feature of Hollywood films are perfect and clean shots that allow you to escape from reality. The films are often associated with American values, lifestyles, and the "American dream".

    Cinema in America is not just entertainment, it is an entire financial industry that has been so from the very beginning. However, this is both a positive factor in terms of great opportunities for implementation, and a negative one - today, in my opinion, everything for large studios has come down to making blockbusters, such attractions for making money.

    • On Hollywood's collaboration with Hitler

    O. Chetverikova: “The national cinema in Russia is created and formed, according to which commercial success and a certain ideological and ideological orientation are in the first place, and in no way art, not the awakening of some high feelings or the formation of a moral personality. All of our latest allegedly patriotic films are created according to these Hollywood standards. As a result, we see on the screen completely alien people who have nothing to do with Russians at all and reflect a completely alien mentality to us. Even outwardly, these heroes have more American-like faces. There is virtually no difference between a Hollywood film and a Russian one...

    The most important thought that should be understood by the audience is that American cinema is currently the main tool and weapon for the restructuring of consciousness, for the actual destruction of our traditional value system.
