Privatbank credit card scams. Security measures when using banking products. Do not trust anyone and do not give information over the phone

Everywhere they regularly talk about scammers - on TV, on the Internet, in newspapers, etc. But until it touches you, you think that you definitely would not have fallen for a divorce. And so I thought. But recently I ran into scammers who stole a hefty amount from my credit card. Felt like a complete jerk. But looking ahead, I’ll say - I came to my senses in time and blocked my cards. But the scammers still stole money. How? Now you will know.

After Privatbank introduced the "Emergency Money" service, which makes it possible to withdraw cash from a card even without the card itself, scammers became more active in this direction. The number of kidkows through the "Emergency Money" service is now simply huge - just google it on the Internet. But until recently, I did not even know that such a service exists. Until they kicked me.

In short, it was like this. I posted an ad on the Internet for the sale of my camera for 1900 UAH. The ad was posted on the popular bulletin board SLANDO.UA. And about a miracle! Within an hour and a half, a potential buyer calls me (scammers are looking for their victims on ad sites - BE CAREFUL!). The bastard introduced himself as Roman from Odessa. Called from Life number. And he said he was ready to buy a fotik. He said that it was convenient for him to pay by money transfer to a Privatbank card. I am a client of Privatbank and, accordingly, I have a salary card and a credit card, so I agreed and gave this condom my full name and card number. To the joy of a quick sale, I didn’t even pay much attention to the fact that the buyer was ready to pay for the goods in advance and was practically not interested in the product itself, asking only a few general questions. Well, just a super-ideal buyer!

Half an hour later, a person calls me on my mobile and introduces himself as an employee of Privatbank. Calls from a mobile that starts with 091, but it doesn't matter - they change numbers anyway. And here is the KEY POINT! He says that money has been received on my card (1900 UAH). But the money was transferred not from the account of an individual, but from a corporate account (legal entity). And in order to receive a payment from the account of a legal entity, I must confirm my data. And the scammer starts asking me about my data: he was interested in passport data, identification number, mother's maiden name (secret word) and so on. I, being sure that I am communicating with the support of Privatbank, said these data. Yes, even then doubts began to torment me, but by mistake I quickly crushed them in myself (the joy of a quick sale was stronger). In addition, I was sure that scammers, not knowing the PIN code, would still do nothing (I simply did not know about the Emergency Money service). And another important point - when I told the scammer my data, he told me my balance on the card. And at the subconscious level, I believed even more that this is a real representative of the bank, because he sees the balance.

ATTENTION! Privatbank employees themselves will not call you and clarify the data. Especially from a mobile number. This is 100% scam! Especially if you recently advertised on the Internet or in a newspaper for the sale of something.

Further, the scammer, who calls himself an employee of Privatbank, said that I should assign my phone number to my credit card (the payment should have gone to the credit card). I said that I was ready to secure my Kyivstar number. And here I SPECIFICALLY LOKHANULS! Kidala said that he needs to know the numbers that are written on the SIM card itself (there are 4 rows of numbers). I, like a true sucker, dictated them. Dictated, and, damn it, came to his senses! All the previous telephone conversations flashed through my head, the facts were compared, I returned from the clouds to the ground and realized - FUCK, I'M DIFFERENT!

I immediately dial the real support number of Privatbank and call them myself. I explain the situation and say that scammers want to swindle me. They tell me yes, it looks like it, and they offer to block both my cards. I, of course, agree. Then I called various Privatbank operators several more times to make sure that my cards were blocked and the balance on them did not change. Several times different operators confirmed to me that the cards are blocked, there is nothing to worry about. At the same time, I was scouring the Internet and already fully knew how scammers operate, having read the stories of people who have been scammed for money. And practice shows that scammers usually, having received information about the card, begin to try to get money by ordering their withdrawal through the “Emergency money” service. To get money, scammers only need a code from a message that is sent to a phone tied to a card. Therefore, they are trying by all means to get this code, hanging various noodles on the ears of the victim.

But my scammers turned out to be more advanced, and I screwed up, which is already there. They found out my SIM card number and I understood perfectly well that they could simply reissue the SIM card and take possession of my mobile number in order to receive a code with SMS on it later. So I called Kyivstar and explained the situation. Kyivstar's answer surprised me - "We can't do anything, we have no way to prevent such cases, but we act only after the fact." Fine? Like, if they take away your SIM card, then we will take action. Okay, being sure that both my Privatbank cards were blocked, I calmly went to bed in order to go to the bank branch in the morning and get new cards to replace the blocked ones.

At about 11 am, I arrive at the branch of Privatbank in my city and say that I need to change the blocked cards to new ones. The operator girl says that now there is no connection with the main office and you need to wait an hour. Okay, fuck him. I'm going to go shopping for an hour. And then I receive an SMS on my mobile phone (on MTS) stating that 2000 UAH have been withdrawn from my credit card. Naturally, I understand that this is the work of yesterday's scammers. But I do not understand how these bitches took money from a blocked credit card. I convulsively dial Privatbank's support number. But the scammers turned out to be so advanced that they blocked my ability to make calls to the bank’s technical support - during the call, the message “Home number” popped up on the screen and then the Life number was some kind of left, and the call itself was cut off. Fucked up! At this time, another SMS arrives stating that another 2000 UAH has been withdrawn from the account. Fuck! I rush by car to Privatbank, fly in to the operator and quickly explain the alignment. The girl takes my card (the connection has already appeared by this time) and checks. It turned out that Privatbank operators did NOT COMPLETELY BLOCK my cards yesterday. That is, the blocking was not complete, and the cards left the opportunity to use the "Emergency money" service. The girl from the bank branch herself is surprised. Having delved into my situation, she herself does not understand why the operators did not completely block my cards yesterday. Indeed, in case of fraud or suspicion of fraud, all account transactions should be completely blocked.

As a result, I wrote a statement to the Privatbank security service explaining the situation and asking them to conduct an internal investigation and punish the perpetrators (technical support operators who did not block my accounts on a fraud complaint). All customer calls are recorded and saved. A girl from my branch of Privatbank (by the way, a very adequate employee) advised me to fully demand that the perpetrators be punished by removing the recording of my conversations with support operators. She herself told me between us - "Your fault is not, you notified support about fraudulent activities in time." And she added - “I don’t understand at all why the Emergency Money service has not yet been closed, because so many people have already lost money through it!”

Additionally, he filed a complaint with the police. The head of security at the bank also told me that the guilty support staff should be punished. Still, I came to my senses in time, and I did not tell the scammers such secret data as a PIN code or secret codes from SMS. So here is the obvious fault of Privatbank - they could not ensure the safety and security of the client's money. And the leaky service "Emergency Money" is to blame for everything.

In addition, if everything was OK with the connection in the bank, the scammers simply would not have had time to withdraw money, since I would have already issued new cards by this time - this is another drawback in the bank's work - there are always problems with communication with the center in the regions .

In any case, I will stand my ground to the end - I AM NOT GUYED FOR THE FUCKING WORK OF THE BANK AND ITS FUCKING SECURITY. Let them look for scammers or compensate for the damage from their own pocket. I don't give a shit. I'm not going to refund anything. Yes, and robbed, fortunately, not a salary card, where my real money is, but a credit card, which I never used and which Privatbank literally imposed on me. At our company, all employees were literally sucked in these credit cards. I once tried to get rid of this credit card and hand it back to the bank as unnecessary, but crap - they just said not to use it if it is not needed. The result on the face - a credit card was bombed.

Now I’m looking at what happened and I realize that I completely screwed up, giving out my data on the card, and even more so, allowing me to steal my SIM card. But you understand it later. The scammers are professional. You believe them. You really believe that you are communicating with a bank employee, and not with a scammer (there even background conversations like other employees are heard when you communicate with a fake bank employee). If they divorced me (and I am a rather distrustful person), then I can imagine with what ease they breed older people.

Along with the development of banking instruments, the skill of scammers who want to take possession of the money of gullible people is also developing. Sometimes these skills are comparable to the wonders of ingenuity, breaking all stereotypes. However, users of plastic cards also show miracles of gullibility and naivety, not wanting to follow elementary security rules.

Bank cards are a convenient product that gives their owners great benefits and opportunities. But it is precisely them that the activities of cybercriminals are aimed at, cracking codes, security information and illegally debiting both their own money from clients and funds from the credit limit on credit cards.

Let us consider in more detail what tricks scammers can use to seize money from debit or credit cards of inattentive citizens using the example of one of the largest banks in Ukraine - PrivatBank. It is he who occupies a large part of the plastic card market in the country - approximately 50% of all plastic card holders are PrivatBank clients. In total, the bank has issued over 19 million cards to date.

Although cards of any bank are subject to fraudulent hacking, PrivatBank offers a number of specific services that give the owner of the plastic certain advantages and conveniences, on the one hand, and on the other hand, they can become an object of attack by fraudsters if the user loses vigilance and behaves carelessly.

Ways to "lull" the cardholder's vigilance

Before using their methods, scammers first try to "lull" the vigilance of the future victim. To do this, they offer the victim to perform a series of actions that are “simply necessary” to achieve the desired result. This includes:

  1. call for an ad. Millions of people are constantly selling something by posting ads on various sites. It is to such a person that scammers call, presenting themselves as an interested buyer. At the same time, they almost never bargain about the price, are not interested in the purchased goods, come up with their own “legend”, why they need this product and offer to pay for the goods only by transfer to a PrivatBank card (they are not interested in all other methods). This can alert sellers of goods, however, the desire to sell a thing faster at a bargain price dulls the feeling of vigilance. A few minutes later, the second scammer calls the victim and introduces himself as a bank employee. He explains that there was a problem with the transfer and clarifies the necessary information, necessary for allegedly “making a payment”. In fact, the data is specified to collect personal information and deduct money from the card.
  2. Bank call. This method is easier than the first one. In this case, the scammers immediately present themselves as bank employees and inform about the money transfer received on the account, for which it is necessary to clarify personal data. If the cardholder does not expect any receipts, then he may immediately suspect something was wrong. But if the owner of a social card comes across (a mother on maternity leave or a pensioner), then they can easily fall for this trick.
  3. Increase in credit limit. This trick is designed for credit card holders. The fraudster introduces himself as a bank employee and informs that the bank is increasing the credit limit for the client. Again, an inattentive user can provide personal information, and attackers will write off all the money from the account, including the credit limit.
  4. PIN code replacement. In this case, the scammer again introduces himself as a bank employee and reports that the PIN code needs to be changed urgently. He can explain this by the fact that they are trying to hack the card, and the bank wants to take measures to eliminate these actions.
  5. Remote earnings. Some people are looking for remote work via the Internet. The attacker pretends to be a manager of the company, offers such a vacancy and asks for card details in order to credit the salary.

Thus, when a potential victim "grabbed the hook", the real fishing begins, during which the scammers move on to technical actions to write off money.

It is worth noting that the fantasy of attackers sometimes knows no bounds, but these are still isolated cases. Most often, scammers use standard methods, which we will discuss further.

Ways to withdraw money from a bank card

Method number 1: Code from SMS

In PrivatBank, you can withdraw money without the physical presence of the card in an ATM, according to the terms of the "Emergency Money" service. In this case, the cardholder must call the bank, provide their passport details and be identified. It is this information that attackers are trying to find out from the owner of the card.

Then you need to tell the bank employee the amount to be withdrawn and the code from the SMS. SMS comes to the number that is linked to the card, so it is difficult for scammers to find out directly. In order to find out the code, the scammers call the victim again and ask for the code in order to credit money to his account, for example, from a corporate account, or a deposit, or from somewhere else.

In fact, no code is needed for this at all. However, the potential victim reports this information. At the same time, in the received message it is clearly written that the code cannot be reported to anyone. Many users explain this paradox by not reading the content of the message.

The most paradoxical cases are that the cardholders give several codes to the scammers. The fact is that it is impossible to withdraw more than 2,000 hryvnias from the card using the "Emergency Money" service at a time.

Based on this, the scammers call their victim again and ask them to say the received code again, since the previous one was incorrect or did not work, and so on. Thus, the card is "gutted" to zero, and the unfortunate client is left without money.

Method number 2: Entering the code at an ATM

This is the second most popular trick of the attackers, which is still bought by gullible bank customers. The reasons for entering the code may be the same as in method #1.

The methods differ in that you do not need to report the code, but you need to enter it at an ATM. Instead of a code, any information needed by fraudsters, for example, a card number, can be used.

As a variant of the development of events, scammers may ask to change the client number in the settings section and set their financial number, explaining that the victim’s number is not determined or there are technical problems on the side of the victim’s telecom operators, etc. In this case, scammers link their phone number to the card and receive SMS to debit money.

To change the financial number at an ATM, you need to enter a confirmation code from SMS. In this situation, the code comes to the scammers, and they tell it to the victim as a new "PIN code".

The saddest thing is that many inattentive customers easily fall for this trick. They do not read the content of SMS, do not think about what menu items they are asked to click.

Method number 3: Transfer via SMS

This option is a fallback, provided that the first two did not work as they should. His scheme is even simpler than the previous ones.

Fraudsters ask the victim to send a code from SMS to the "service" number of PrivatBank 10060 in order to credit the incoming transfer.

At first glance, everything looks harmless, because it really is a bank number.

PAY500+XXXX+YYYYYYYYYY or SEND500UAH+ХХХХ+ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ, where

  • 500 is the transfer amount,
  • XXXX - the last four digits of the victim's card number,
  • YYYYYYYYYY - mobile phone number of scammers,
  • ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ - fraud card number.

According to the first SMS, the user transfers money to the attackers' mobile account, and in the second case, to the card.

Method number 4: Top up your card

In this case, fraudsters can write off money even if the client's account is zero. They ask to replenish the card in order to credit the allegedly received transfer to it, explaining that it is technically impossible to transfer money to an empty card.

In other cases, the attackers immediately specify that you need to transfer money to a credit card in order to withdraw credit money.

Customers completely forget that the bank has no requirements for account balances.

Method number 5: Fake a SIM card

This method is one of the most complex and almost invisible to the cardholder. Attackers create a duplicate of the SIM card and gain full control over all linked accounts. This schema looks like this:

  • the phone of the future victim receives a call from an unknown person with a request to call back,
  • the victim receives an amount from an unknown person and the SIM card is blocked,
  • fraudsters, using information about the last dialed numbers, the time of the last call and the amount of replenishment, block the number and ask the operator to make a duplicate,
  • using a duplicate SIM card and the victim's card number, all funds are transferred to other accounts.

This situation is the most difficult for the cardholder, because he no longer receives SMS about transactions, and it can be difficult to remember to link the number to the card.

It is not difficult to analyze and understand that scammers steal money from cards with the hands of the victim. Despite constant warnings from bank employees, customers continue to tell fraudsters confidential information. To do this, the future victim is guided by several factors:

  • Since the bank employee already knows me, it means that he can be trusted. In fact, bank employees do not have access to information about PIN codes or one-time passwords.
  • Getting a benefit. A profitable deal to sell a product or receive a transfer overshadows the mind of a person, and he provides all the necessary information.
  • Number match. The fact that the purchase price of the goods and the price in SMS are the same, users notice, and the fact that it is not a crediting operation, but a write-off operation, often goes unnoticed.
  • Carelessness. So, young mothers who suffered from the hands of scammers often complain that it was not the child who cried, and because of this they could not read the content of the SMS.
  • Service ignorance. Often, customers do not know that banks do not need additional information to credit money to accounts, that there are no requirements for account balances, and so on. If people knew this, they would immediately understand that the explanations of the scammers are absolutely unrealistic.

It is worth remembering that the cardholder is personally responsible for the safety of personal information. The bank will not reimburse the lost money if the person personally transferred this information to third parties. In order not to get into such a situation, the client must know the elementary safety rules.

Basic rules for using bank cards:

  • To be credited to the account, the sender only needs to know the card number and the name of its owner. All other information, including passport data, TIN, date of birth, expiration date, codes, is not needed.
  • Bank employees never ask for personal information about the client over the phone. Any such conversation should alert the person. In that case, you can ask which department you can go to in person to provide this data. With absolute certainty, it can be predicted that the call will end immediately - the scammers will understand that "the wrong person was attacked."
  • You should always read the content of SMS.
  • Do not disclose the card PIN and one-time passwords to anyone.
  • When the caller offers to help the bank employee to activate the card at an ATM, you need to insist on doing this in the branch with surveillance cameras. If it is not possible to go to the branch, and a stranger offers his help, then you need to be careful and monitor the actions taken at the ATM.
  • Do not post personal information on social media.
  • Do not call back to unknown numbers, but switch to a contract form of service in the post office so that only its owner can receive a duplicate number.
  • If you lose your mobile phone, you should immediately block all linked cards.
  • Read the security rules on the bank's website.

What to do if scammers deducted money from the card?

If, nevertheless, this happened, you should immediately contact the bank and the police. In some situations, money can be returned through the protective mechanism of payment systems. So, the mastercard has a Chargeback service. However, if it turns out that the client himself transferred his data to third parties, then the probability of a return is reduced to zero.

If the client suspects that scammers have started working with him, then the card should be blocked immediately. You also need to contact the police. Based on the application, the bank will start investigating the case and make a decision on reimbursement. Sometimes this process can take up to several months.

Objectively occupies a special place here. Firstly, because the active cards of this institution in circulation account for more than half of all "plastic" on the market - 58.2% or 21.4 million cards (as of 04/01/2019). Secondly, because the bank offers a number of original services, which, on the one hand, give the cardholder a number of advantages (for example, the ability to withdraw money from an ATM without a card), and on the other hand, due to the negligence of cardholders, they become a convenient “loophole” for scammers.

Live bait

Before applying their tricks, scammers first need to lull the vigilance of the future victim. And often they manage to do this by inviting the victim to take certain actions to achieve the desired result at first glance. The most common situations are:

  • the most common “bait” is a call to an ad. Fraudsters call a person who has posted an ad for the sale of something on one of the popular sites and first introduce themselves as a buyer. True, it’s a little strange: such a buyer almost never bargains and does not recognize other payment methods, except for a transfer to a PrivatBank card. Sellers are often alarmed, but not for long. The desire to sell goods as soon as possible, and even at a bargain price, outweighs. After some time, the second of the scammers calls back to the victim and introduces himself as a bank employee. Allegedly, there were some problems with the transfer and you need to clarify the recipient's data. The purpose of the whole scam is to find out the personal information of the cardholder necessary to transfer or withdraw money from his card in one of several ways (which will be discussed later);
  • the second way to “roll up” to a future victim is even simpler than the first one - the cardholder immediately gets a call supposedly from the bank, reporting that the transfer has “arrived” in his name. If a person does not expect any translations, then of course he may doubt. But if not, then in this way you can “hook” even that cardholder who does not sell anything. Especially often the owners of social cards - pensioners, young mothers - come across such a trick;
  • Another common scam trick is designed for credit card holders. Posing as a bank employee, the fraudster offers to increase the credit limit on the card over the phone. And allegedly for this - again asks for the personal data of the cardholder;
  • another method is often combined with one of the already mentioned ones, but can also be used independently. The fake “bank employee” informs the cardholder that he needs to change the pin code, and for this he asks for the card details;
  • there are more original ways. For example, scammers may target people who are looking for work (in particular, remote work) through the relevant sites. After the “manager” calls, the potential victim is contacted by the “accountant”, who asks for card details, ostensibly to pay salaries, issue a fuel card, and the like.

When the cardholder is already sufficiently involved in the "story" told by the scammers, they move on to the technical implementation of the theft of money. And although the fantasy of scammers in this regard seems limitless, there are "standard" ways that are most common.

Method one: "Say the code from SMS"

PrivatBank makes it possible to withdraw cash from an ATM without the presence of a card. The corresponding service is called "Emergency Money". To use it, the cardholder must call the bank and go through identification - give the number and expiration date of the card, passport data. Most often, it is this information that scammers try to find out at the first stage under one of the above pretexts.

After that, you need to tell the bank employee the amount you want to withdraw and enter an eight-digit code at the ATM. This code is sent as an SMS to the mobile phone number attached to your card. That is, fraudsters, as a rule, cannot receive the code directly, since it comes to the cardholder.

The paradox is that most often the card owner himself gives the code to the attackers. Despite the fact that the SMS contains a warning about the inadmissibility of its disclosure. “He said that an SMS will come now, call the code without hanging up. SMS comes, I naturally read only the code, I don’t read the text, ”one of the participants in the Internet forum, who thus lost a round sum, explains his actions.

Often, scammers explain the need to name the code by the fact that the money is allegedly transferred “from a corporate account”, “from a deposit” or in some other “non-standard” way. In fact, in none of these cases is any identification of the recipient - in particular, through the disclosure of secret codes - required.

Even more surprising is the fact that many victims tell the scammers the code several times in a row. The fact is that you cannot withdraw more than 2,000 hryvnias at a time using the "Emergency Money" service. But the perseverance of the scammers and the gullibility of the victims, who tell the scammers one code after another, because the previous one allegedly did not work, sometimes lead to losses of tens of thousands of hryvnias.

Method two: "you need to enter the code at the ATM"

Judging by the feedback from the victims, the second most popular trick of fraudsters is that the cardholder is asked to enter a certain code at an ATM. The scammers call the reasons for this the same as in the previous case: the transfer allegedly cannot be credited to the card, and for this to happen, you need to “confirm” its receipt at an ATM. At the same time, the scammers ask the victim to inform when she will be near the ATM in order to “help” with the operation by phone.

Of course, there is no such procedure in Ukrainian banking practice. However, victims often, without hesitation, succumb to the persuasion of scammers, go to an ATM and perform transactions dictated by phone.

Various options may apply here. Sometimes the "code" is the fraudster's card number, and the victim sends him transfer via ATM.

In another scenario, the victim is asked to enter the menu " Settings - Set financial number” and enter the phone number of the scammers. Either as some kind of "code", or because the victim's own number is "not confirmed." As a result of such actions, the fraudsters' mobile number turns out to be linked to the victim's card, and they can independently receive an SMS code for withdrawing cash or transfer money using mobile banking. “In order to get the coveted money, scammers require you to confirm your mobile number at an ATM. Then, allegedly, the number is not checked, so they are asked to enter the one that they dictate. Thus, they tie the card to their number and perform all financial transactions with it, ”says a forum participant who suffered from such a fraud scheme.

The paradox here is that often the victims do not even notice that they are entering not a “code”, but a phone or card number. They don’t even think about what menu items are selected at the ATM, and they don’t read the text on the screen indicating that funds are being sent to someone else’s card.

In addition, to change the “financial number” at the ATM - the mobile number associated with the card - it receives an SMS code from the bank, which must be entered at the ATM. The code in this case goes to scammers who tell the victim as a kind of “new pin code”.

Method three: "confirmation" of the transfer by SMS code

This method is often used as a "spare" when the previous two did not work, but sometimes it is used by scammers as the main one. The scheme is much simpler than the previous two: supposedly to "confirm" the receipt of the transfer, the victim is asked to send the code to the service number - 10060. It looks pretty harmless - it's really a bank number. True, the code itself is dictated or sent via SMS by scammers. As a rule, it looks like this:

  • PAY100+1234+XXXXXXXXXX, or
  • SEND100UAH+1234+YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Here 100 is the amount (100 hryvnias, it may be different), 1234 is the last four digits of the victim's card number, XXXXXXXXXX and YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY are the mobile phone number or the scammer's card number, respectively.

In the first case, the victim transfers money to the fraudsters' mobile account, in the second case, directly to the card. “I didn’t immediately notice that this was a top-up code for someone else’s mobile phone, the same one from which the scammer called me, so they “divorced” me for 125 hryvnia,” a forum participant shares his memories, a victim of such a fraud scheme. Obviously, the method works best with those cardholders who have never used the SMS banking service before.

Method four: "top up your account"

This method is not used on its own, but in combination with any of the above and allows fraudsters to rob even those cardholders who do not have money in their card account - of course, not without their own help. If there are no or very few funds on the account of a potential victim, the scammers ask her to deposit them there, explaining that “the transfer cannot be credited to an empty account.” In some cases, scammers immediately ask for a card number, the balance of which exceeds the amount of the transfer. Or a credit card: supposedly not credited to a regular transfer, but in fact - to “clean up” the credit limit. Of course, banks do not have any requirements for the size of the balance on the card and its availability for crediting the transfer. Such tricks are aimed at ensuring that a considerable amount appears on the account, which scammers can steal.

At the same time, many victims, without any hesitation, go to the bank and replenish the card. And not for 5-10 hryvnias, but immediately, for example, for a thousand. Which, of course, pleases the scammers, but they themselves are upset when they discover that the money was immediately withdrawn from the account. “After following all their instructions, half an hour later I discovered that all the money that I personally deposited an hour ago had been debited from my card,” recalls another forum participant who suffered from fraud.

Method five: strike from the rear

Perhaps the most complex and least obvious for the cardholder, and therefore the most dangerous way to steal money from an account, is a duplicate SIM card. At first glance, this is not about money at all, but in fact, in this way, fraudsters can gain complete control over the victim's accounts.

The scheme looks like this. The cardholder's mobile, linked to it, receives calls from unknown numbers and SMS with a request to call back from unknown people. Calls either fail, or the callers come up with reasons for the cardholder to call them back. For example, in the case of the sale of goods through classifieds sites, this can be called by “buyers” who, however, will have constant interruptions in communication. After that, a replenishment of the minimum amount from an unknown person comes to the cardholder's mobile account. And in the near future the card is blocked.

With the help of information about the last dialed numbers, the time of the last call from the number and the last replenishment, scammers block the number and order a duplicate SIM card from the operator. Theoretically, to make a duplicate, you need to specify a lot of information: for example, the date of the first call, or the balance on the account, and also present a passport. In practice, the operator's employees are not always so scrupulous, and fraudsters can present a fake passport (for example, lost by another person).

Using a SIM card and knowing the PrivatBank card number, fraudsters can transfer the victim's funds to their card using SMS commands. They can also withdraw cash from an ATM using the "Emergency Money" service. True, for this they will need to find out other cardholder data for identification by phone.

For the victim, the situation is further complicated by the fact that he often discovers the loss of money a few days after the event. After all, he can no longer receive SMS notifications about debiting, and he may not remember immediately about linking a mobile card number to a bank account.

Obviously, in order to use this method, fraudsters need to find out not only the mobile number, but also at least the last four digits of the potential victim’s card number, or even its entire number. They can do this in one of the most common ways - for example, they can introduce themselves as a buyer of goods on an ad or a bank employee.

After analyzing the fraud methods outlined above, it is easy to see that in the vast majority of cases, fraudsters steal money from the card "by the hands" of the cardholder himself. To succumb to the entreaties of scammers, to name all possible secret codes, to independently transfer money through an ATM, or even replenish the account so that the scammers have something to steal, the victim is forced by several factors:

  • trust in a fake bank employee who already allegedly knows the information about the victim’s account and allegedly has access to the pin code. In fact, bank employees do not know the pin codes of the cards, and even more so, the one-time passwords that come in SMS;
  • motivation by the promise of benefits: receiving a transfer, profitable sale of goods, etc.;
  • a predetermined amount - for example, the price of a product - and the one indicated in the SMS notification from the bank usually coincide, which once again dispels the victim's doubts. And the fact that they agreed on enrollment, but there was a write-off, the victims often do not notice;
  • distracted attention. For example, young mothers from whom fraudsters stole money from payment cards often refer to the fact that they did not read the SMS text, because “a child was crying in her arms”;
  • incompetence in banking services. Fraudsters often explain that “additional identification” is allegedly needed to confirm the transfer from a corporate account, from a deposit, from a “collective account”, “so that the money is credited without problems”, that the transfer cannot be credited to an empty account, and the like. In fact, these explanations have nothing to do with reality.

Be that as it may, the responsibility for the independent transfer of their savings into the hands of fraudsters lies with the victim. For a bank, explanations like “I didn’t read the text of SMS when I was awake” is not a sufficient argument to compensate for the funds stolen by fraudsters. That is why it is so important for cardholders to remember the security rules that protect their accounts from intruders.

These rules directly follow from the described methods of fraud:

  • To receive a transfer, the sender needs to know only the card number and your name. Passport data, TIN, date of birth and expiration date of the card are not needed. If you are negotiating, for example, the sale of goods - do not give the buyer any extra data;
  • if they call you supposedly from a bank and ask you to give personal data, this is a reason to be wary. If you are in doubt whether a real employee is calling you, ask when and which branch you can go to to solve the problem in person, and not by phone;

Banks never identify the cardholder when making an outgoing call - only if you call the bank yourself. In addition, remember that PrivatBank employees do not call from personal mobile numbers - only from numbers with the code of Dnepropetrovsk (056).

  • Whatever SMS you receive from the bank (from number 10060) - always read its content;
  • never tell third parties(including bank employees, as well as acquaintances, friends, relatives, sellers in the store) a pin code from your card, as well as secret one-time codes;

Never give your PIN to strangers, including relatives. Bank employees are not allowed to ask you for a pin code. Do not write down the pin code on the cards.

  • if a bank employee (a person who introduces himself) offers to help you by phone in carrying out some actions with the card (for example, activate at an ATM), insist on carrying them out at a bank branch.

Do not listen to the advice of strangers when performing transactions at an ATM. If it is not possible to visit the branch, and you still decide to use someone else's help, then at least be careful and watch what actions you choose in the ATM menu;

  • do not post on social networks the mobile number linked to the bank card, do not indicate the date of birth, address and other personal information.

Fraud victims often wonder: how do scammers know so much about them? In fact, it is easy to find out the name of its owner by the card number by initiating a money transfer to the card in the Privat24 system or in the terminal. Then, using the name of a potential victim in social networks, fraudsters can find out her mobile number and other data, with the help of which they will continue to portray the “omniscient” bank employee.

  • to avoid duplicating your sim card, never call back unknown numbers. Especially if the calls come frequently and from different numbers. If possible, it is better to switch to a contract form of service, then only you can get a duplicate card. As an option, you can get an inexpensive mobile phone with a separate number that you will use only for banking services;
  • if you have lost your mobile or the SIM card has stopped working, immediately block the bank cards linked to this phone number;
  • be aware of the services provided by your card, possible methods of fraud, study the rules for safe use of the card. Often, banks publish such information on their websites, provide it through the mailing list, and you can also follow the information on specialized sites. Many victims of scammers, for example, complain that they did not know that money could be withdrawn from a card even without one.

If you still failed to save yourself, and your money fell into the hands of scammers, then experts recommend filing a complaint with the bank, and in some cases, contacting the police. In some cases, money can be returned through a special mechanism provided by payment systems.

True, if it turns out that the cardholder himself transferred confidential data to scammers, or made a transaction confirmed by a pin code at an ATM, then the chances of returning the funds will be minimal. Using the claim mechanisms of payment systems, the client can return his money, for example, if he ordered goods in an online store, but the goods did not come to him. Or if funds were debited from the client's account for a certain service (for example, in a hotel), to which he did not agree. Or if the client paid for the service, but did not receive it (for example, replenishment of a mobile phone).

In other cases, the cardholder may rely mainly on the goodwill of the bank. The bank may refund funds to the client in cases specified in the agreement, or at the discretion of the bank's management.

In any case, if you suspect that the card data got to scammers, or have already discovered the loss of funds, then first of all you need to block the card. If we are talking about fraud, then in addition to contacting the bank, you must also write a statement to the police. First of all, if there is a serious suspicion of fraudulent transactions with your payment card, you need to contact the bank and block the card. Then you should contact the Ministry of Internal Affairs with an appropriate statement about fraudulent actions against you. After that, an application for a disputed transaction is also submitted to the bank - in accordance with the rules of international payment systems and internal procedures, the bank will conduct an investigation and, based on the facts revealed, decide on a refund. Depending on the complexity of the situation and the need to dispute the operation in the international payment system, the process may take up to 3-4 months.

It is worth noting that many of the described methods of fraud, as well as precautions, remain relevant for cardholders not only of PrivatBank, but also of other institutions.

Opinion

Natalia Kangina, Technology Manager of MasterCard Europe Representative Office in Ukraine

The cardholder needs to contact their issuing bank that issued the card. The issuer will review the situation and decide on the protest procedure. In some cases, in case of illegal actions of the merchant, in order to resolve the issue, the client should first of all contact the merchant. These are situations where, for example, a refund is promised, but the money has not arrived in the account; or the goods are ordered and should be delivered, but did not arrive (or arrived, but damaged); or a hotel, restaurant or some other place is booked - the client has come, but this is not what he was promised in the contract. If the merchant cannot help, the client must contact the issuer.

Fraudsters are now being talked about almost constantly - there is a lot of information in the media, on television, on the radio. But as long as this problem does not concern us, we think that all talk is just nonsense. And as soon as you yourself fall into the hands of scammers, it immediately becomes clear how developed it is in the country.

Scammers are actively stealing money from citizens' cards. They became especially active after Privat introduced the emergency money service. Now the number of kidks due to such a service is simply huge, but many people still do not know about such a possibility.

The scam works quite simply. If citizens place online advertisements for the sale of goods for quite large amounts, then scammers choose them. After all, they are looking for their victims on the sites. This happened to me when I posted an ad for the sale of the camera. Interestingly, they called me just an hour later.

The fraudster introduced himself as Roman, said that he was ready to buy a camera and could pay by money transfer through Privat. Of course, from the joy of such a quick sale, I give all the details.

About an hour later, they called me and introduced themselves as an employee of Privatbank. The “employee” said that money had been received into my account, which, due to the fact that they came from a corporate account, is difficult to credit. You can receive this money only after confirming your data, and the scammer begins to find out all the information from me - passport data, identification code, mother's maiden name. Since at that time I was sure that I was communicating with the support of the bank, I provided all the information. Among other things, after I clarified the data, the scammer said my balance on the card, which even more inspired confidence in the legality of his actions. After all, he sees the balance, probably works in a bank.

Here is my big mistake. Remember, Privatbank employees will not call and clarify all this data. You should be especially wary if you recently submitted an ad on the Internet!

In conclusion, the imaginary Privat employee said that he needed to fix the card number on the account, for which he needed to dictate the numbers from the SIM card. I immediately dictated them, and only then I began to compare all the data and realized that this was pure scam! I immediately call the Privat support service, quickly explain the situation and the employee (already real) confirms that they really wanted to divorce me. He offers to block my cards, which of course I agree to. Along the way, I was looking for information on the network about similar situations, which turned out to be quite a few. Fraudsters have been working on this scheme for a long time, as they need to get a code that comes to a phone number. This code allows you to withdraw money without a card. My scammers were very advanced, they found out the SIM card number and now they have the opportunity to reissue it in order to safely receive all the codes. Of course, I called Kyivstar and told them the situation. I was unpleasantly surprised at Kyivstar, they said that they could not do anything in this situation, nor could they prevent such cases.

To be continued…

The next day I go to Privatbank to get new cards instead of blocked ones. But while I get to the bank, I receive a notification on my phone that 2,000 hryvnias have been withdrawn from my card. I understand that these are scammers who, after a couple of minutes, withdraw another 2,000 hryvnia from the card. In Privat, I ask the girl to explain the situation and tell me how they could withdraw funds from blocked cards? It turns out that the cards were not completely blocked and it was possible to use the Emergency money service with them! The girl in the bank turned out to be extremely pleasant and conscientious, she advised me to contact the bank support service. After all, all calls are recorded and for some reason they did not completely block the cards after my request, it is very surprising. Of course, I wrote an application to the Privat service!

And here is the final...

A few months later the answer came. I was told that I was to blame for the situation myself and that they would not compensate me for anything. It turns out that I gave confidential data to the scammers! But what data do they consider confidential - passport data or phone number? Confidential data always included the card pin and message codes that come to the phone. But the scammers did not receive this information from me.
